Hello If your a Swedish Fishemen then you need to be a member of the Gothenburge deep sea fishing club! These guys are a greay bunch of like minded skilled anglers who will share there naot and knoledge with you! They came to Stay at Skarnsundet last week for a weeks deep sea fishing. The guys braught there own boats over with them and rented the partments from me.

The main target species for the week was Ling, lumb and a specimen place.

I supplied the lads with 80 kilo of fresh herring so they would have good bait and as much knowledge as I could think of for the lads to have a successful holiday.

The Trondheim?s fjord is not especially known for its monster ling but over the past five year I have spent many fishing trips targeting ling with in an area on 30 min from Skarnsundet Fjordsentre. Although this has restricted the area that I can access it has challenged me to fish local marks with different techniques and baits to pass the knowledge onto the guests.

The Guys fished various different marks for the ling and lumb and found that anchor fishing in 120 ? 150m deep gave the best results. I only use the Imax deep sea fishing rig, when Im fishing deep. If you make a rotten bottom on the end the rig will last you a full week! They light up great in the water and come with a pair of quality sized hooks.

This ling was taken on the second day and weighed just over 50 pounds.

The ling weighed just over 50 pounds and was taken from a new mark just 10 min from Skarnsundet Fjordsentre.

Notice the deep sea ling fishing rig hanging out of the mouth and how close they are to land. As you can see from the tide line in the picture the ling was caught at Low water, which is alway my most productive ling fishing time!

This Ling weighed 60 pounds and was part of a 200 hundred pound bag.

The video below demonstrates how I tie a typical ling rig.

Ling fishing techniques for deep water fishing at Skarnsundet in Norway – YouTube

Because of the lack of study on the ling population in the fjord we know very litlle about there behavior. I stopped targeting ling this year because I was unable to return the fish and was conches that I might be damaging the ling population in my local area. Im not convinced this is the case because this year we have seen many smaller size lings in the fjord, whic is a sign that the population is healthy.

The group also concentrated there efforts on Plaice fishing in the B?rgen fjord and Straumen, lots of plaice were caught over 4 pound but the fish of the week must go to this angler with a cracking 7 pound 10 oz specimen. A fantastic fish that I personally would have swapped all the ling for.

Hello

The winter is behind us here at Skarnsundet and were well into the spring season now with temperatures up to 18 degrees this week we have the welcomed return of the elusive sea trout and some potential salmon to start fishing for. Since the prolonged end of winter I have been waiting for theses furious silver power houses. Using all sort of crazy and coloured lure so far this seaso I have not managed to land a seatrout ( been a park manager is totally different to been a fishing guide). Over the past couple of weeks of trying for them I have learned that wind direction and water tempreature are major factores to be considered! The shallow water rosse by 2 degrees between mid day and evening. 90% of our seatrout are taken in the middle of the day and in sunny still conditions.

This small sea trout took a traditional 22g spoon. The sea trout is slim and was certainly on the feed!

Using this very light equipment when you are fishing in Norway can be so much fun especially if you want to target Monster Dabs and Plaice.

Spring is an exciting time at Skarnsundet, we have fantasticc Plaice and dab fishing here with plaice taken every week over 5 pound from both the shore and boat. Plaice is a great species to target. The plaice here like relatively shallow water and the season starts in Mid April and runs until October. September and October are the best time to take a placie over the magical 8 pound mark.

This 8lb Plaice was caught from inside the harbor at Bessaker in October and was returned. At this time of year the plaice can be up to 10lb from this mark.
Techniques and bait for plaice fishing is very simple. From the shore we use a fixed up and over with plenty of bling! Best baits seem to be rag worm, shrimps, Herring or Lug worm.

A healthy 3.5lb Plaice taken from the shore at Straumen on a standard shore rig.
In this short Video Steve Ace lands a 4 lb plaice from a well known mark called Stus point.

Plaice fishing at Skarnsundet. – YouTube

This is Steve Ace from Veals in Bristol with a fine 4lb pound plaice caught at anchor just out side Straumen. Finding were the plaice are feeding is the key to success when anchor fishing in the Fjord.

A healthy 4 pound specimen taken from the boat on an October afternoon. We were only fishing eight meters deep at the time with light spinning rods.
Check out the video below with Steve Ace demonstrating how to tie a plaice rig that can be used at Skarnsundet.

The Bristol boys had there annual March trip to Skarnsundet Fjordsentre this week. Steve Ace from Veals is on his 12 th trip to Skarnsundet in the last four years and loves the shore fishing we have on offer.

This week the Cod fishing has been a struggle, the usual numbers of fish have not been there like in other weeks but every week is different and even in Norway we have weeks were the fishing is slower.

The Pollock fishing made up for the lack of cod action thou, with a hectic two hour session on a new mark, producing 16 Pollock with six over ten pound! This mark is going to be really interesting in the coming months as the Pollock start to spawn. I think a 20 pounder will be on the cards!

The lads caught the two double figure cod of there trip from the notorious Stus point and losing a bigger fish near the surface gives me higher hopes for this weeks group.

Steve caught the first Plaice of the season at 3 pound 6oz its always a sign that the fjord is taking a turn towards spring. Will be out looking for a sea trout soon.

The lads had a ride up to the coast to try there look for a halibut or too. Steve got a bit more then he bargained for when a monster fish dragged him over the side of a cliff!

Check out the video.

Fish pulls man over cliff edge!! – YouTube

The Greek god (Phytos) was triumphed landing his first ever halibut!

Congratulations mate

It was great to see you all again and thanks for the many laughs.

Hello

In the start of February I set myself a challenge to fish for 30 x 5 hour Consecutive shore fishing sessions in and around the area of Skarnsundet Fjordsentre. The aim of the challenge was to catch a cod of 30 pound giving my a new PB and very much enjoyment. Im now half way through the challenge and last week on my 10th Consecutive session I caught my new PB cod from the shore, a fantastic 30 pound cod.

I was over the moon! The cod was caught from Stus point in Straumen, this is the 3rd cod over 30 pound to be caught from Stus point this year.

I was using a joey Mackerel fished on a Pulley rig about 50 yards out. The fish took over slack water and was released alive.

If you want to follow my challenge I put a report on my Facebook site every day.

Hello everyone

Just wanted to bring you all up to speed with how the shore fishing at Skarnsundet Fjordsentre was going this year. This week I have two groups shore fishing at Skarnsundet The sea angling report lads were only staying for a long weekend (5 days) but that was enough time for them to find some quality fishing and bag some doubles.

Its always nice to see new faces here so thanks to Dave and Dave for making the trip over.

With the lads only coming for five days they were mad keen on making the most of there time. No timing for unpacking, grab the gear and hit the pier (50 yards from the apartment) Nicky had the first good fish of the night with a cod just over Nine pound.

The guys caught some quality cod and Haddock from the pier.

The Three most consistent marks for the cod were Stus Point, Straumen field and the amazing straumne point. Stus Point has produced the cod over 30 pound int he last 6 weeks!

Nicky with a lovely cod from the point.

The temps were down to -22 and the lads kept on fishing (Well prepared)

The landing is always a good shot for a night of Haddock fishing.

Irish Dave with a quality double

Wayne Davison, Justin Owen, Craig and steve braved 7 days of a Norwegian January this week to get stuck into some good cod action. The lads were armed with with different types of baits from rag worms to crabs, all safely packed in cool bags and in there cases ready for action.

The lads had flat neap tides for the 7 days so we would concentrate on fishing the popular Starumen area of Skarnsundet which is about a 10min drive from the accommodation.
We also got to enjoy the most amazing natural light display on more then one night, three double figure cods more Haddock then you could imagine, great sport on the Pollock from the pier and a bonus sea trout for Justin while he was fishing for Haddock!!

One night we were fishing at Straumen point, it was -14 and we were catching cod steadily all night. Wayne had a nice 10 pounder to round of the night but the highlight for me was to see the Northern lights. What a fantastic natural light display that is. It whirled its way around our heads for a couple of hours then disappears as quick as it arrived. Amazing! I managed to get a couple of shaky pics, and left the mark wishing I had taken my tripod along, typical.

For Craig and Steve it was there first time shore fishing in Norway so Skarnsundet was a great place for them. Big thanks to Wayne for taking care of the booking.
The lads were soon into some cod and Haddock action on the pier in front of the apartments, it could not be any easier then having one of our most productive marks just 50m away from the apartment.
Wayne with a lovely 12 pound red cod.

Wayne with another double from Starumen point.

Wayne has been ten times to Skarnsundet now and he swear by a pulley pennel rig with rag, crab, Mackerel or herring. oic
Steve and craig in on the Straumen action

Steve with his double

Justin having a Haddock fest on the landing. Having Wayne as his Gilly he Landed 12 Haddock in a short 2 hour session!

A good fire going keeping me and the boys warm on a late night session on Straumen slipway. You need it when its -14

A bonus sea trout for Justin while he was fishing for Cod.

Thanks for taking the time to read this report. Cheers

Hello
Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to all the lads from the Chesil Beach Forum and the Seven Estuary lads for coming and spending a week with us at Skarnsundet. Throughly enjoyed the week and making some new fishing friends is an added bonus. This trip has been planned for a long time, the idea was that the lads would fish over the spring tide period for the seven day holiday. What we found was that the first two days of the holiday fished very well then we had a two day quite spell then the fishing picked up again as the tides started to fall! When I say a quite spell, I mean the lads still caught plenty of fish but it does not seem to be as easy over the very big spring tides!
Fish of a lifetime!
The first day produced the fish of a lifetime for Paul Tipper with this magnificent 32Pound 9oz Cod!
The monster took a rag and herring bait fished about 50 yards out from Stus point. This same mark produced another 30 pound cod 5 days previous! Stus point is an Ebb mark and can hold some monster cod.

The Release.

Probably one of the most amazing sights in cold water fishing is a cod been returned to fight another day, big thanks to Jimmer for the great pictures.

Lucky man
The next cast produced a 15 pounder for Paul and a 12 pounder from the field at Straumen.

A fine fish supper
Haddock were on the wish list for many of the anglers and they were not going to be disappointed. The biggest was 7.5 pound! Best bait seem to be rag or blacks with Shrlys beach been the most consistent mark.

The view from Shirlys beach!

Seatrout!
John Strange was patiently weighting for a typical big cod bite (Long slow pull down)

When he got this fantastic bar of silver. Four more were caught during the week!

A fine brace of winter cod

17.5 pound cod from Straumen field!

Leslie Lawrence with a nice 11 pound pollcok landed from Mosvik pier.

Almost a European record Ghost shark but the fish was returned alive!

Skarnsundet Fjordsentre in the winter moon light!

The view from the apartments!*

Thanks for a fantastic week guys.
Please add all your own pics to this post!
Cheers

Paul Roges, Paul Channing and Steve Ace from Bristol Had there annual January winter cod fishing trip to Skarnsundet this week. The lads have been coming to Skarnsundet twice a year for the past three year to sample the cod action we have to offer.
Inside out. They no this place inside out. Most of there equipment is left over at Skarnsundet so it makes there traveling much easier. They borrow tripods from me so they dont have to carry rod tubes on the plane. they always book an extra case which, is full of frozen bait, live rag and plenty of food for the week. The herring is baught from me then its just a matter of geting fishing!

Local Knowledge

After a poor couple of months winter fishing in the UK they guys were keen to get
stuck in to the large amounts of cod and haddock that are around the Straumen area. Unfortunately Paul Channing had a neck injury the day before they flew out so he was going to be out of action for 4 days. Paul and Steve had both done there research before coming over so were prepared for the weeks tides and any potential weather changes. I gave them the valuable local knowledge that I have gained over the past 4.5 years!

Doubles Galore

Herring proved to be the top bait of the holiday. We usually expect the rag worm to start been more active around this time. By checking the mouths of each cod it gives you a good idea of what they are feed on. If i ever take a fish for the table I take great interest in dissecting its gut for any signs of fish, crab, worms or crustaceans (match the hatch) No signs of rag worms yet thou! When the rag worms begin to spawn they swim around at different depths this usually triggers a feeding fixation on them. I always make sure the guests have a spare fridge in the apartment to store any worms baits.
Paul and Steve Totalled 7 doubles in 6 days fishing, Countless cod to 10 pound, two fish lost that are still talked about now and many other species.
Steve Ace 17 pound 9oz from Straumen point on a herring bait, lovely markings!

13 pound

13 pound 8oz.

Paul Rogers with a big headed 12 pound 4oz cod.

12 pound cod from Stus point.

Paul again with a 12 pound 9oz cod.

I finally got in the action with this 17 pound 9 oz cod from straumen point take on a shad. Fantastic fun.

Thanks for another great week lads, look forward to seeing you all in March. Cheers

Ray and Wayne have been away from Skarnsundet for the past couple of seasons but two months ago I got a call fromWayne asking if I had any availability for the shore fishing in early January. After looking over the tides and dates it was sorted.
The lads were armed with a good selection of bait they brought with them and I supplied the herring!
A typical Straumen cod bait.

Before Christmas we had lost a couple of big fish from the straumen so it was going to see how the first week of January would fish. My expectations were high as I think this will be our bumper year and 4 year cycle.
30 POUND COD!

Wayne proved that in the first couple of days by landing a 30 pound cod from Stus point. A monster of a cod from the shore, returned alive and in perfect fit condition. Unfortunately the photos did not*come out as well as they had hoped but the aim was to get the fish back in the water ASAP. Mission accomplished! The doubles kept coming.
Ray with a 15 pounder

Wayne with a cod just over 10 pound. I have never seen so many cod caught between the 4 and 9 pound bracket as they did this week!

Wayne and Ray were only here for a 5 day trip, which goes quicker then you can imagine but the doubles kept coming along with an abundant supply of Haddock with an average weight of 4 pound.

I got in on the action on the last night with this lovely 17 pound 7oz cod caught on a small 4inch shad fished with a MH spinning rod.

Im not sure on the total amount of fish caught during the 5 day holiday *but the lads were certainly not disappointed.
Thanks for coming lads.

Cheers Phill

After a Hectic Christmas period I finally go the chance to get my shad fishing gear out for a short winter session. Three hours is long enough shad fishing when its -10 and you have no gloves on! I started the session by using a small 4 inch red and yellow Kopyto relax shad and after 10th cast I had not felt a fish. There was still a lot of current running so I stepped up to a 70g Jig and changed to a dark green shad.

Then the fish started coming

I ended up with 8 Cod with the biggest been 13 pound 8 oz, missed plenty of bites but thoroughly enjoyed my self

Check out the video to see the technique I use, maybe in can work in UK waters?
