Hi There,

My name is Phill Dale I moved to Skarnsundet Fjordsenter in May 2008 to work as an assistant site manager to Klaas Jan Jonkman who owns and runs the sea fishing resort! Been from East Yorkshire I am a keen shore angler fishing from the cliffs of Flamborogh to the beaches on the Holderness coast!

When I was given the opportunity to work in Norway I could see the potential for shore fishing so I started looking round for marks that could produce fish, digging my own bait and learning what I could from the locals and my boss! The problem is that shore fishing with bait is not popular in Norway so it was down to experience and luck to find the fish! As I started to look for the marks I was catching good bags of cod, haddock whiting, dabs, dogfish, coalfish and ghost sharks!

The fishing was good during the summer but it became even better as the winter arrived at the end of September I had discovered 10 or more good marks, some producing fish over low water and some over high! Like any other angler it’s a dream to catch 10 or more cod in a 4 hour session with many bigger fish always there for the taking!!

I’ve had cod to 26 pound from the shore and lots of nice fish!! My guests have caught shore cod upto 50 pounds (Yes 50 pounds) so the potential here is truly awesome Its mainly cod that I fish for but there are plenty of other species on offer.

The scenary in this part of Norway is also spectacular especially in the winter months and fishing under the Northen light is an experience of its own!

With skarnsundet been a popular boat fishing venue throughout the summer months we have all the facilities to offer shore fishing holidays during the summer and winter season!! This is our first year offering the shore fishing holidays so I would like to get anglers over here to help me discover more marks and learn more about the ones, which I have discovered!!

I have maps to all the local marks and I will take the guests fishing to all the best places!! We also have a small tackle shop on site were you can buy bait and equipment!!

Steve Ace, Paul and Phetos joined us for a weeks summer shore fishing last week!! The guys had a fantastic week with the weather and some amazing fishing!! All the fishing was undertaken from land and around the skarnsundet area!! Plaice were the main target of the trip! Heres Phetos with a cracking 5 pounder, which took a juicy rag worm!!

The lads had an impresive list of species which included

cod to 13ib 11oz
Wolfish 7lb 3oz
haddock 5lb 3oz
Plaice 4lb 11oz
whiting 2lb 14oz
dabs 1lb 10oz

Along with Pollock, coalfish, ghost sharks and gurnards!!

Ive been in contact with my friend Matt about coming to Skarnsundet Kayak fishing for a while now and last week we finaly got it sorted and got the chance to see what potential there was for Kayak fishing in the fjord!! I supplied the Kayak! And Matt sorted out the rest, It was abit of an experiment but we had a sona, some good local Knoledge and we were sorted! I have never fished from a Kayak before but Matt has had years of experience!
He started off on the coalfish just under the bridge, infront of the apartments!!

This one weighed 21 pound and gave Matt a fantastic fight!
Matt also caught many other species such as Haddock!

Most of the Pollock were taken on sidewinders and small plastic baits!!

Phil Dales Sea Fishing In Norway Gallery

Ive had 2 groups of guests over from England this week and both have had success on the Halibut! The first were Phill Buckley and his crew from Liverpool! The lads were asking me were would be the best chance of a halibut from, I showed them the place were the last ones had been taken from!! 3 hours later and they come into the shop, laughing and joking and asking me if I know how to filliet a halibut!! At just over 7 kilo it was a lovely fish!!

The lads also enjoyed great fishing on the cod to 18 pounds and coalfish to 15 on the light gear they are fantastic sport!

The great thing about skarnsundet is its position in the fjord, which means that boat fishing is possible every day no matter which way the wind is blowing!! Paul Channing has also been here for a week having ago at the shore fishing and with Plaice to 3 pounds and some new marks descovered it was a good week for him!! The best came on his lastnight when we took a trip out on the boat! His first drop down on a medium spinning rod, rigged with 3/4 of a bluey and he was in!! 35 min later and I managed to slip the net under his 11kilo Halibut, we were over the moon! After 20min I gave up trying to put the fish back as it had warn its self down so much there were no signs of life even thou we netted it!!

I know there are much bigger Halibut in Norway but I get as much enjoyment when my guests catch a 5 kilo one or a 30 kilo!!

Phils Norway Gallery

We had some great sessions Pollock fishing this week from the boat and shore, Ian had Pollock to 10 pound from the shore and 11 pound from the boat!

The Tempest sidewinder sand eels were taking most of the fish and light 18g golden spinners!

Ian mainly fished from the shore during the day then we fished from the boat on an evening, we both lost mainy pollock and got snapped off on more then one occasion!

The equipment that I use for the light fishing is a 20g-40g 270MH action shimano Diaflash! The reel is a shimano fireblood 4000 with .13mm braid! The yellow and red sidewinders seem to be the most affective but Ian took several Pollock between 8 and 11 pounds on different coloured lures!! It was a great week and we descoverd 2 new Pollock marks to fish from the shore!!! Bill and Dave also came with Ian on the trip to and they are puting a report on soon so keep a look out for that!! If anyone is intresting in coming over to have ago to Norway for this fantastic Pollock fishing just send me a mail and ill try and help as much as I can! I have many different marks to fish from both shore and boat for the Pollock!

One of my guests had the catch of a life time yesterday with this lovely 85 pound halibut!! I think the most exciting thing about the catch for me is that it was taken from 40m deep and 60m from land!!! Shore fishing season has started!!! The other thing is that he was fighting with the fish for 1 and a half hours and it gave him a good battle on his 80g shad and light spinning rod!! The other guys in the boat filmed the best parts so Ill try and get it posted on youtube in the next couple of days!!

Well its been a while since I have been out shore fishing but last night I couldnt resist, after spending the last month boat fishing I was very keen to get back to the shore fishing!! The guys have been catching plenty of good sized cod from very close to the shore friom the boats so I headed down to straumen for a 3 hour sesssion!!

First cast and about 5 min later, the result was a lovely 6.5 pound Haddock!!

As soon as the lead had settled in the coalfish were on to it, so I started using larger baits to avoid them to get to the bigger cod!!

Most of the cod were between 6 and 10 pound but I think there was much bigger fish there!!

They were even coming 2 at a time!!

I realy think the shore fishing now can be as good as the winter fishing!!!

Well, the season has got into full swing here, with 36 guests arriving from Holland this week!! The weather has been fantastic and the lads have fished every day, with fantastic fishing for the cod,l pollock and a bonus seatrout!! I did a short 4 hour trip with 4 lads yesterday, The plan was to catch the fresh herring first then have a look for the cod!! Here were the results

The lads were using light gear with 85g heads with full herrinf and a VMC treble hook in the side!

Nice 4 hours fishing, we also had whiting to 5 pounds on the same method!

Went home and had some dinner then decided to fish with the shad down in straumen for a couple of hours! The fishing is always very good at this time of year in Straumen! I ended up with 14 codling around 3 pounds, 2 at 8 pound and this was the best one!!

Got some free time this week so gona get my shore gear back out and have ago for the big Plaice!!
