Day 1 The Flatie Bash

The First day of the competition got under way with a new event this year, the flatie bash billed as a fun day it was a get together for all the lads and a great day for meeting old and making new friends.

flattie-bash1

The day got off to a very wet and miserable start but it did not deture the 150 competitors from turning out to fish the match, with so many anglers turning up to fish the match the boundaries had to be extended at both ends of  Wilsthorpe and Fraisthorpe beaches to accommodate all the anglers.

flatie-bash4

As soon at the start time arrived anglers all lined up ready to cast in but after a few minutes with the lines in the water we all knew we were in for a long hard day, with the swell coming from the north and the strong under current it was washing the the leads out with the lines going south, not to mention the dreaded weed but in the end we managed to hold with the 6oz leads.

flatie-bash2

Half way through the match only 4 flaties had been caught, then my rod end gave a little knock wound in to find a little school bass 30 cm but with it being a flattie bash it did not count, but it was a fish and i was still pleased to catch one, as the match came to the end with the rain still coming down a lot of anglers left the beach early.

Despite the weather and the sea conditions every one I spoke to said they would do it all over again next year, that’s what I call true fishermen. I did not manage to get any photographs of the prize giving as it was brought forward from Saturday to Friday the day of the event, but will post all the prize winners together with the main 2 day events

Flatie Bash the Results

  1. Ivo Focke – 2 fish 47cm
  2. Fraser James 2 fish 45cm
  3. Tom Pothecary   2fish  45cm

Day 2

Day 2 first day of the main 2 day event, after the over night torrential rain it made me wonder what the get down were going to be like as the cliffs were already treacherous with all the recent bad weather we have had.

Few anglers fishing Brid north beach, next stop Barmston surprisingly few rods at Barmston same at Ulrome and Skipsea as these venues have in the past been packed out with anglers. As i made my way down the coast to Hornsea the surf got bigger, Hornsea north beach packed out no room same on Hornsea South side, next stop Mapplton car park full north side of mapp also plenty on beach, south side few anglers but looking at the cliffs on that side they looked very dangerous, big surf on

Next stop Tunstall anglers as far as the eye could see, with the size of the suft it just made me wounder how the were managing to hold the bottom, time to go back to get ready for the weigh in

Saturdays Results (Day Two)

  1. S Lawson (Beverley) with a cod of 3.895 and a nice cheque for £2000.00
  2. N Todd (ATWICK) with a cod of 2.700 and a cheque for £750.00
  3. N Hemmingway (Batley) with a cod of 2.270 and a cheque for £500.00

Day 3

Sunday day 2 of the main event, the forcast for to day was not looking very good with a strong north eastly forcasted it would build a very big surf up and make it almost impossible the hold the bottom. A discission was made early on in the week to cut the fishing time down by 2 hours, the discission was made in the intrest of safety to all the anglers, as they would be washed off the beaches and back up the cliffs, with the high tide and the bad forcast it would make the last 2 hours of the competition unfishable and very dangerous.

But it did not deture any of the lads from giving it a go, first stop Brid north beach the beach was packed and it was fishing mainly flats but it was fish, carried on down the coast the sea very big decided not to go all the way down could not see the point with the sea as big as that, m8 of mine fishing at East Newton reported back we carnt hold bottom making our way back to Mackys the time was 11am.

At the weigh it looked as if it was turning out to be a flatie bashing session, then the odd small codling started to be weighed in, as i was taking a few pics looked out side and saw a nice bag being brought to the scales, in walked juzy with a very nice fish when he put it on the scales it weigh around the 6lb mark we all new it was the best fish so far to day.

Took a few pics of the fish and thats when i found out he was a forum member aka juzy, scales down 3pm we new juzy had won the day then he told me he weighed in on the Sat with a fish of 2lbs that must surely put him in the running for the overall 2 day prize as the lad that won on the sat failed to weigh in on the sunday. the presentation juzy won the day then the suspence untill the overall placings, the time had come S Lawson took second place with an aggregate of 3895 juzy had just pipped him with an aggregate off 4000, juzy stepped up to claim his prize to the cheers of all the anglers.

After the prize giving juzy took the mike to thank the organisers and also praised all the lads that fished in the difficult conditions and hoped to see them all you  back again next year, Congratulations juzy well done. I my self  have met and made many new friends and its been a privilege to be able to do the article for the Holderness site, hope to see you all next year so we can do it all over again, once again congratulations to all the prizes winners and a big well done to all who fished the match

  7. hi all,
ths year was my first year fishing bridlington,
and i must say i was very disapointed with the fishing!
it seems that after talking to a lot of anglers that the
organisers are running the match round the booking-in venue.
surely the match should be run round the ANGLERS…
with anglers coming from all parts of this country and other
country’s…hundreds of pounds spent on BAIT,LODGEINGS,FEUL,FOOD AND
DRINK.at lest they could have got a good tide??
i know that they are restricted to the booking-in venue, but they
could either change the venue or how about running it in november
when the caravan park will be closed for the winter, and the fishing
    will be much better?

    all the best puddle man……

  8. A big well done to all the competitors and a great report and pictures

  9. Great report and pictures bassman, well done to all who fished the match in the conditions, failed to weigh in again but will be back next year to try again

  10. Congratulations to all the prize winners, and a big well done to all the anglers that fished the match in the awful conditions, but thats fishing you cannot pick the weather, will be back next year to try again. Great report and pictures JM

  11. Well done to all who braved the elements to fish the match, and congratulation to all the winners, lets hope next years event is fished with better tides and weather,
Great report and pictures well put together
