Hello If your a Swedish Fishemen then you need to be a member of the Gothenburge deep sea fishing club! These guys are a greay bunch of like minded skilled anglers who will share there naot and knoledge with you! They came to Stay at Skarnsundet last week for a weeks deep sea fishing. The guys braught there own boats over with them and rented the partments from me.

The main target species for the week was Ling, lumb and a specimen place.

I supplied the lads with 80 kilo of fresh herring so they would have good bait and as much knowledge as I could think of for the lads to have a successful holiday.

The Trondheim?s fjord is not especially known for its monster ling but over the past five year I have spent many fishing trips targeting ling with in an area on 30 min from Skarnsundet Fjordsentre. Although this has restricted the area that I can access it has challenged me to fish local marks with different techniques and baits to pass the knowledge onto the guests.

The Guys fished various different marks for the ling and lumb and found that anchor fishing in 120 ? 150m deep gave the best results. I only use the Imax deep sea fishing rig, when Im fishing deep. If you make a rotten bottom on the end the rig will last you a full week! They light up great in the water and come with a pair of quality sized hooks.

This ling was taken on the second day and weighed just over 50 pounds.

The ling weighed just over 50 pounds and was taken from a new mark just 10 min from Skarnsundet Fjordsentre.

Notice the deep sea ling fishing rig hanging out of the mouth and how close they are to land. As you can see from the tide line in the picture the ling was caught at Low water, which is alway my most productive ling fishing time!

This Ling weighed 60 pounds and was part of a 200 hundred pound bag.

The video below demonstrates how I tie a typical ling rig.

Ling fishing techniques for deep water fishing at Skarnsundet in Norway – YouTube

Because of the lack of study on the ling population in the fjord we know very litlle about there behavior. I stopped targeting ling this year because I was unable to return the fish and was conches that I might be damaging the ling population in my local area. Im not convinced this is the case because this year we have seen many smaller size lings in the fjord, whic is a sign that the population is healthy.

The group also concentrated there efforts on Plaice fishing in the B?rgen fjord and Straumen, lots of plaice were caught over 4 pound but the fish of the week must go to this angler with a cracking 7 pound 10 oz specimen. A fantastic fish that I personally would have swapped all the ling for.

Hello

The winter is behind us here at Skarnsundet and were well into the spring season now with temperatures up to 18 degrees this week we have the welcomed return of the elusive sea trout and some potential salmon to start fishing for. Since the prolonged end of winter I have been waiting for theses furious silver power houses. Using all sort of crazy and coloured lure so far this seaso I have not managed to land a seatrout ( been a park manager is totally different to been a fishing guide). Over the past couple of weeks of trying for them I have learned that wind direction and water tempreature are major factores to be considered! The shallow water rosse by 2 degrees between mid day and evening. 90% of our seatrout are taken in the middle of the day and in sunny still conditions.

This small sea trout took a traditional 22g spoon. The sea trout is slim and was certainly on the feed!

Using this very light equipment when you are fishing in Norway can be so much fun especially if you want to target Monster Dabs and Plaice.

Spring is an exciting time at Skarnsundet, we have fantasticc Plaice and dab fishing here with plaice taken every week over 5 pound from both the shore and boat. Plaice is a great species to target. The plaice here like relatively shallow water and the season starts in Mid April and runs until October. September and October are the best time to take a placie over the magical 8 pound mark.

This 8lb Plaice was caught from inside the harbor at Bessaker in October and was returned. At this time of year the plaice can be up to 10lb from this mark.
Techniques and bait for plaice fishing is very simple. From the shore we use a fixed up and over with plenty of bling! Best baits seem to be rag worm, shrimps, Herring or Lug worm.

A healthy 3.5lb Plaice taken from the shore at Straumen on a standard shore rig.
In this short Video Steve Ace lands a 4 lb plaice from a well known mark called Stus point.

Plaice fishing at Skarnsundet. – YouTube

This is Steve Ace from Veals in Bristol with a fine 4lb pound plaice caught at anchor just out side Straumen. Finding were the plaice are feeding is the key to success when anchor fishing in the Fjord.

A healthy 4 pound specimen taken from the boat on an October afternoon. We were only fishing eight meters deep at the time with light spinning rods.
Check out the video below with Steve Ace demonstrating how to tie a plaice rig that can be used at Skarnsundet.

The Bristol boys had there annual March trip to Skarnsundet Fjordsentre this week. Steve Ace from Veals is on his 12 th trip to Skarnsundet in the last four years and loves the shore fishing we have on offer.

This week the Cod fishing has been a struggle, the usual numbers of fish have not been there like in other weeks but every week is different and even in Norway we have weeks were the fishing is slower.

The Pollock fishing made up for the lack of cod action thou, with a hectic two hour session on a new mark, producing 16 Pollock with six over ten pound! This mark is going to be really interesting in the coming months as the Pollock start to spawn. I think a 20 pounder will be on the cards!

The lads caught the two double figure cod of there trip from the notorious Stus point and losing a bigger fish near the surface gives me higher hopes for this weeks group.

Steve caught the first Plaice of the season at 3 pound 6oz its always a sign that the fjord is taking a turn towards spring. Will be out looking for a sea trout soon.

The lads had a ride up to the coast to try there look for a halibut or too. Steve got a bit more then he bargained for when a monster fish dragged him over the side of a cliff!

Check out the video.

The Greek god (Phytos) was triumphed landing his first ever halibut!

Fishing Charter Boat Valhalla

The story i am about to tell must be every skippers and anglers nightmare (Sunday the 11th August 1985), it started off as a good days angling aboard the charter boat the Valhalla out of Bridlington with a group of anglers from Negas SAC Hull, the boat was skippered by Ian Taylor known to his friends as skip a good friend of mine. The Valhalla was returnig to to Bridlington harbour after recieving a weather warning when she lost a rudder just out side the harbour enterance and was rapidly swept towards the harbour wall.

Coast guards who were on the scene with in minutes threw lines and ladders over the wall in desparate at an attempt to rescure the men thrown into the freezing water. Local fishermen also threw lines and life belts to try and get the men of the boat.

Several of those on aboard managed to scramble to safety, while 5 were airlifted to the shore by the RAF helicopter from Leconfield. The rest were hauled to safety onto dry land, but sadly one man Mr Kenneth Handley (58) did loose his life

Below are some of the pictures that Ian has kindly agree to let me tell the story

Trawler leaves harbour to try to give assistance, you can see skippy attempting to get a line aboard the trawler

Well this post is not going to tell you how to fish the Flamborough mark …..I’m still working that out for myself …but isn’t that the fun of it…working out what where and when ?

I have started to really enjoy fishing the Flambro’ marks….the last two years I have driven countless miles up to the likes of Robin hoods Bay and the other further North marks…..and yes I have got a reasonable idea of what and where to go in certain conditions…..but this year I have been looking at what I have right on my doorstep……..well not quite but within 20 mins door to door

So I shall start with the Lighthouse area moving North towards North Landing.

Parking is at the car park next to the lighthouse, which is not that cheap but is certainly a lot cheaper than a parking ticket….as I found out last year ! ….the grass area near the car park is treated as an overflow car park at the same rates as the car park….BEWARE!!

The spots I fish around the lighthouse are ‘Common Hole’ and the ledges below the Foghorn itself one of which is known as Gun House ,these spots are accessed from the car park by walking towards the white Foghorn building and then when at the end a simple short walk down the well worn path takes you onto the ledges. The ground infront only dries out on the biggest of tides and exposes a series of gullies with fingers of scar extending out into deep water.I like fishing this spot in a big sea with sth or sth east winds off your back. I ve had fish in dark and daylight here as the colour can be good with the tidal flow pushing round the head from Brid bay.
This is looking back at the Foghorn perched up on the cliffs above Selwicks Bay known locally as ‘Silex’ Bay.
The spot below the foghorn in the picture shows ‘Common Hole’ and sth beyond that is Foghorn and Gun House.

Walking North from the car park you pass a wooden Puffin statue…don’t go down the path next to it or you will end up down on Silex beach…….it is a long winding stairway down

Walk about 40-50 yds along the road and you will see a path that heads north down slightly alongside the edge of the golf course.

This path will take you eventually to North Landing….plus all the marks off the cliff tops along the way.
The first mark you will come to is ‘Arches’ which is the cliff top above ‘Kindle scar’….the path down is just past the WW11 bunker and is a gentle walk down to a flat platform on top of an archway….not to be confused with ’5 Arches’ which is at the nth end of the marks.

The ground in front of ‘Arches’ is a lot of flat scar but there are some really nice gullies to cast to….sorry but walked this route at High water so can’t show them.

There are several small banks to fish off within 100 yds or so of ‘Arches’ the first I know of being above ‘Stottlebinks’…from the cliffs a high water spot as on medium to big tides the ‘binks’ uncover and can be fished by walking on from Silex Bay.

The next photo is looking down into the platform above ‘ Course Hole’….it can be found by walking to the bunker on the golf course nearest the cliff…..again a high water mark and there is a good flat top above to cast off and a reasonable pull up the cliif.

Next up lookin North towards Brail Newk in the back ground and in the mid ground is ‘Cradle Head’
a nice drop down bank that gives a good pull up from some heavy kelp ground, not a tide fish spot but for me a heavy sea heavy ground spot.

The flattened grass in the middle of this shot is the fishing platform down into Swineshaw Hole……there is enough room for one to chuck off this spot or a short hop back to the top to get a proper boomsmash cast out !
The pull up is nearly straight and is down out of any Southerly winds as well.

This is the nab of ‘Cradle Head’ and is a nice easy walk down onto a flat but narrow platform…again a high water heavy ground chuck so for me a night time heavy sea spot.

We then pass by ‘Brail Newk’ you can’t miss it…it is the highest and furthest out to sea of the Flambro cliff marks…roughly midway between North Landing and Silex.
At the side is a bay…I can’t remember the name but there is a bird nessting right on top of that stack !

We next come to ‘Fraggle Rock’….I think traditionally known as the ‘Saddles’……it looks narrow but is a nice wide flat fishing platform giving access to good ground and kelp within a reasonable chuck….not quite a tide sspot …at least not as much as Brail but does give access to some good ground from an easy fishing spot.

The next main spot is ‘Newcomb’ and this is a small cut back bay and it does have a roped get down…..had a scurry half way down tonight but for me it needs a harness to do the full descent…not for the angler with vertigo !
Look carefully in the centre of the shot there is a rope following the crack down !

From here North is worthy of a seperate post altogether and so will be posting that next.
A cracking part of the coast that marks the transition from sand to rock angling.

I love this part of the coast and enjoyed the walk tonght….mind you the night was made when driving back to Hornsea I saw a sign saying ” Slow mud on the road”
Kim said to me ” Slow mud ?
What if we turned the corner and found a group of 70′s pop stars hobbling across the road on zimmer frames mumbling….that’s neat, that’s neat, that’s neat….I really love your tiger feet !!

Hello

In the start of February I set myself a challenge to fish for 30 x 5 hour Consecutive shore fishing sessions in and around the area of Skarnsundet Fjordsentre. The aim of the challenge was to catch a cod of 30 pound giving my a new PB and very much enjoyment. Im now half way through the challenge and last week on my 10th Consecutive session I caught my new PB cod from the shore, a fantastic 30 pound cod.

I was over the moon! The cod was caught from Stus point in Straumen, this is the 3rd cod over 30 pound to be caught from Stus point this year.

I was using a joey Mackerel fished on a Pulley rig about 50 yards out. The fish took over slack water and was released alive.

If you want to follow my challenge I put a report on my Facebook site every day.

Search Phill Dale (Profile pic of me holding a cod)

Cheers

Hello everyone

Just wanted to bring you all up to speed with how the shore fishing at Skarnsundet Fjordsentre was going this year. This week I have two groups shore fishing at Skarnsundet The sea angling report lads were only staying for a long weekend (5 days) but that was enough time for them to find some quality fishing and bag some doubles.

Its always nice to see new faces here so thanks to Dave and Dave for making the trip over.

With the lads only coming for five days they were mad keen on making the most of there time. No timing for unpacking, grab the gear and hit the pier (50 yards from the apartment) Nicky had the first good fish of the night with a cod just over Nine pound.

The guys caught some quality cod and Haddock from the pier.

The Three most consistent marks for the cod were Stus Point, Straumen field and the amazing straumne point. Stus Point has produced the cod over 30 pound int he last 6 weeks!

Nicky with a lovely cod from the point.

JV getting in on the Haddock action.

The temps were down to -22 and the lads kept on fishing (Well prepared)

The landing is always a good shot for a night of Haddock fishing.

Irish Dave with a quality double

Darren with a double from the point.

Dave with a double figure red cod from the gully, what a fantastic fish.
